Chapter 7

What are weird beliefs? If I told you that the world was flat …you would think I had suddenly lost my mind. Yet is was 1500 before educated people recognized that the world had to be round. Before that … basically everyone assumed the world was flat. It wasn’t until 1800 that the knowledge that the world was round became wide spread. Weird things hang on for a long time.
A 3 part PBS mini series called “How we became human” is being shown this November. The scientific artifact findings from 6 million years ago to the present shows how our species evolved. I believe in the science that supports evolution. A Gallup poll conducted in 2008 found that 44% of Americans agreed that God created human beings pretty much in the present form at one time within the last 10,000 years.
That is a significant difference in thinking on this particular subject. It just demonstrates that human critical thinking is evolving. Science and religious/spiritual thinking are two equally important aspects of conscious thought. They act as important checks and balances upon each other … especially as we move into the 21st century.
Unethical science needs to be held in check. Erroneous religious thinking needs to be corrected. If you move on to college to a social science course, one of the objectives of the course will be to expose erroneous myths, superstitions, and other confusions of our time … including unethical science. To foster critical understanding between science and religion will be a key element in years ahead. Science and religion perform completely separate functions, yet they are important complimentary functions to our still evolving human conscious mind.
I could do a poll of the class to see if you feel that science and religion are equally important complimentary functions. But, I won’t. Instead I would ask you to check with your hippo campus. Your memories are who you are and they are stored in your hippo campus. Your mind is constantly involved with self talk, so ask yourself … (think critically now) … and then ask yourself if you have any intractable weird convictions? Most people do.
